For the degree of Master Game Technology, I researched how the HUD might affect someone's flow state in the game Counter-Strike 2.
Abstract
The head-up display (HUD) has proven to be a controversial piece of user interface (UI), as its effects on player immersion are unclear. However, while research on defining immersion has been plentiful, research on how it is affected by the head-up display is scarce. This research is aimed at investigating the effects of the HUD on the mental state of flow, which is comparable to system immersion. In the game mode of deathmatch, nine Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) players were assessed on their concentration, feeling of control, temporal experience, and perception of the head-up display. These players were divided into two groups for comparison, the first of which played with all HUD elements enabled, while the second played with only the crosshair enabled. Results were analysed through thematic analysis, paired with user indicated scores. Findings indicate that the head-up display likely has minimal effects on a person's concentration and feeling of control, with no impact on their temporal experience. However, it is speculated that the flow state could impact one’s perception of the HUD, due to the intense concentration associated with it.
